How to Read the Patterns

Each dot (.) is a short signal called a dit. Each dash (—) is a long signal called a dah. A dah lasts exactly three times as long as a dit. Timing rules for live transmission:

  • One dit of silence between symbols in one letter
  • Three dits of silence between letters in a word
  • Seven dits of silence between words

Every morse code message is built from three building blocks. A dot. A dash. A space. That is the entire system.

Work left to right, one character group at a time. Each group of dots and dashes separated by a space is one letter. Each group of letters separated by a slash is one word.
